Lady Falcons Sweep Livingstone 12-1 and 17-0 in Softball

RALEIGH, N.C. – Meranda Zanni (So./Phoenix, OR) and Korey Hill (So./Virginia Beach, VA) allowed one run combined and Saint Augustine's University amassed 29 hits in two games to topple Livingstone College 12-1 and 17-0 in a CIAA softball doubleheader at Walnut Creek Softball Complex on Sunday, March 29, 2015.
 
The Lady Falcons lead the CIAA Southern Division with a 2-0 mark. They are 5-3 in the CIAA and 11-9 overall. The Lady Blue Bears fell to 0-2 in the Southern Division, 1-6 in the CIAA and 7-11 overall.
 
Zanni threw a two-hitter in five complete innings for the pitching victory in the first game. She improved to 3-1 as a pitcher after striking out nine batters and walking two.
Hill was just as efficient in the second game. She was the winning pitcher after hurling a one-hitter and limiting the Lady Blue Bears to zero runs in five complete innings. Her pitching record is 4-3 after striking out eight batters and walking one.
 
Zanni was also productive at the plate. She was 5-for-7 with one home run, two doubles, one RBI and five runs scored in two games combined for the Lady Falcons, who had 15 hits in the first game and 14 hits in the second game. Akera McPhaul (Fr./Greensboro, NC) was 6-for-7 with one double and five runs scored.
 
Tyanna Petersen (So./Brooklyn Park, MN) was 4-for-6 with two RBIs and two runs scored, and Jo'Landa White (Sr./Leland, NC) was 2-for-3 with a home run, three RBIs and four runs scored.
 
Hannah Stutts (Sr./Statesville, NC) and Taylor Walters (Sr./Douglasville, GA) led the Lady Falcons with four RBIs each. White and Danyelle Noland (Fr./Nashville, NC) each collected three RBIs and Hill tied Peterson with two RBIs.
 
In the first game, the Lady Blue Bears scored first to take a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning on an RBI groundout by Precious Roberts. The Lady Falcons responded with two runs in the bottom of the first when White smacked a two-run homer which scored Zanni and her.
 
The Lady Falcons opened a 9-1 lead with seven runs in the third inning. Hill started the onslaught with a double which scored White and McPhaul. Stutts scored Petersen and Hill on a double, and Walters scored Stutts and her on a two-run homer. McPhaul scored Noland on a single.
 
Noland padded the lead with a three-run homer in the fourth inning which scored Walters, Porscha Walton (Fr./Chesterfield, VA) and her. The game ended after the top of the fifth inning due to the eight-run mercy rule.
 
In the second game, the Lady Falcons picked up where they left off in the first game as they took a 4-0 lead in the first inning. White scored McPhaul on a single and later scored on a passed ball. Both Zanni and Hill scored on passed balls to complete the first-inning scoring.
 
The Lady Falcons turned the contest into a rout in the second inning when they scored seven runs for an 11-0 lead. Jasmine Rios (Fr./Greensboro, NC) scored Peterson on a double, and Rios scored on a passed ball. Walters scored Noland on a fielder's choice, McPhaul scored on a wild pitch, and Stutts scored White and Walters on a single. Petersen scored Zanni on a single.
 
The Lady Falcons added three runs in the third inning for a 14-0 lead. Walters scored McPhaul on a double, and Walters scored on an error. Petersen scored Zanni on a single.
 
The score was 17-0 after three runs in the fourth inning. McPhaul scored on an error, and Zanni scored Walton and herself on a two-run homer. The game ended after the top of the fifth inning due to the eight-run mercy rule.
 
The Lady Falcons return to action Monday, March 30, when they host Johnson C. Smith University in a CIAA doubleheader at Buffaloe Road Park in Raleigh, N.C. The first game begins at 11 a.m. followed by the second game at approximately 1 p.m.
