Lady Falcons Defeat Shepherd For Season's First Softball Win

WILMINGTON, N.C. – Korey Hill (So./Virginia Beach, VA) struck out eight batters in six innings and drove in the game-winning run in the seventh inning to give Saint Augustine's University a 6-5 victory over Shepherd University in the Shaw Softball Challenge at Olsen Park on Sunday, March 8, 2015. The victory was the first of the season for the Lady Falcons.

Hill also knocked in the Falcons' only run in a 5-1 loss to Concord University at the Challenge earlier in the day. Her sacrifice fly scored Meranda Zanni (So./Phoenix, OR) in the sixth inning. The night contest against Edinboro University was canceled.

The Lady Falcons (1-3 overall) posted a 1-1 record at the Challenge Sunday in their first action since February 14 due to inclement weather the last several weeks. They are scheduled to play Mansfield University at 2 p.m. and Barton College at 4 p.m. on the final day of the Challenge Monday, March 9.

The Lady Falcons held off Shepherd in the late innings to gain the victory. They scored two runs in the sixth inning for a 5-3 lead when Taylor Walters (Sr./Douglasville, GA) singled in Marley Parker (Fr./Langley, British Columbia) and later scored on an infield error. Shepherd scored two runs in the bottom half of the sixth inning to tie the game, which set the stage for the dramatic seventh inning.

After Hill's groundout which scored Haili Pettifer (Fr./Langley, British Columbia) put the Lady Falcons ahead 6-5 in the seventh, Shepherd placed runners on third and first with two outs. But shortstop Danyelle Noland (Fr./Nashville, NC) scooped up a soft grounder and threw to Walters at first base for the third and final out.

Walters led the Lady Falcons with two RBIs and one run scored on 2-for-3 hitting against Shepherd. Jo'Landa White (Sr./Leland, NC) and Hill each collected an RBI and Parker scored two runs.

The Lady Falcons scored first against Shepherd with three runs in the top of the first inning. White's single scored Jasmine Rios (Fr./Greensboro, NC) and Walters' single scored Parker. White scored from third base on a double steal for a 3-0 lead. Shepherd rallied to tie the game with two runs in the first inning and one run in the fourth inning before the Lady Falcons opened a two-run lead in the top of the sixth.

Against Concord, the Lady Falcons were down 5-0 before scoring their only run on Hill's sacrifice fly in the sixth. Parker was 2-for-3 at the plate and the trio of Zanni, Walters and Pettifer each had one hit.
