Box Score 2 RALEIGH, N.C. – The pitching trio of Meranda Zanni (So./Phoenix, OR), Korey Hill (So./Virginia Beach, VA) and Hannah Stutts (Sr./Statesville, NC) held Johnson C. Smith University scoreless as Saint Augustine's University won 5-0 and 2-0 in a CIAA softball doubleheader at Buffaloe Road Park on Monday, April 13, 2015.
The Lady Falcons gained sole possession of first place in the CIAA Southern Division with the sweep. They are 4-0 in the Southern Division and 13-9 overall. The Golden Bulls are 4-2 in the Southern Division and 11-13 overall.
Zanni gained the pitching win in the first game. She allowed three hits and struck out eight batters with no walks in seven complete innings to improve to 4-1 this season.
Hill earned the pitching victory in the second game. She gave up three hits, struck out three batters and walked one batter in five innings to up her pitching record to 5-3. Stutts got the save after pitching the final two innings. She recorded one strikeout with no walks and allowed two hits.
The Lady Falcons pounded out 12 hits in the first game. Danyelle Noland (Fr./Nashville, NC) went 3-of-4 with two RBIs and one run scored, and Jo'Landa White (Sr./Leland, NC) went 2-for-3 with two RBIs. Hill and Haili Pettifer (Fr./Langley, British Columbia) both went 2-for-3 with one run scored, and Stutts went 2-for-2. Jasmine Rios (Fr./Greensboro, NC) had one RBI and one run scored.
The Lady Falcons scored four runs in the fifth inning to break a scoreless tie. Rios scored Regime McCombs (Fr./Greenville, SC) on a groundout, and Noland scored Pettifer on a single. White scored Noland and Hill on a two-run single. The Lady Falcons added the final run in the sixth inning when Noland scored Rios on a single.
The trio of Jocelyn Hernandez, Stacy Peralta and Morgan Hasty each had a hit for Johnson C. Smith. Victoria Lopez was the losing pitcher.
After a stellar pitching performance, Zanni produced offensively for the Lady Falcons in the second game. Her inside-the-park home run to right field in the first inning gave the Lady Falcons a 1-0 lead. The Lady Falcons added their second run in the fifth inning when Pettifer scored Noland on a groundout.
Zanni went 1-for-3 with a home run, one RBI and one run scored for the Lady Falcons, who finished with five hits. Rios went 2-for-3 at the plate.
Tia Greene went 2-for-3 for Johnson C. Smith. Peralta was the losing pitcher.
The Lady Falcons are back in action Tuesday, April 14, when they visit Barton College in a doubleheader at Jeffries Field in Wilson, N.C. Game times are 2 p.m. and 4 p.m.
