Box Score 2 WILSON, N.C. – Meranda Zanni (So./Phoenix, OR) hurled her second shutout in two days as Saint Augustine's University downed Barton College 2-0 in the first game of a non-conference softball doubleheader at Jeffries Field on Tuesday, April 14, 2015. The Lady Falcons lost the second game 6-5 in the sixth inning when the contest was called due to weather.
The Lady Falcons won two of three games against Barton in the season series. They defeated Barton 5-2 in the Shaw University Challenge in Wilmington, N.C., on March 9.
Zanni scattered five hits in seven innings in the first game to improve to 5-1 as a pitcher. She recorded four strikeouts and two walks. On Monday, April 13, Zanni pitched seven complete innings in a 5-0 victory over Johnson C. Smith University in Raleigh, N.C.
Zanni also stood out on offense. She went 2-for-3 with a double at the plate for the Lady Falcons, who had seven hits. Korey Hill (So./Virginia Beach, VA) had a double, one RBI and one run scored, and Marley Parker (Fr./Langley, British Columbia) had a double and one RBI.
The Lady Falcons scored both runs in the fourth inning. Hill scored Danyelle Noland (Fr./Nashville, NC) on a double and Parker scored Hill on a double.
Lindsey Sharpe led Barton on 2-for-2 hitting with a double. Liz White scattered seven hits in seven innings with six strikeouts and no walks for the pitching loss.
In the second game, the Lady Falcons fell behind 6-1 early but chipped away at the deficit. They appeared to have momentum until the game was called before the bottom of the sixth inning started.
Hill went 3-for-3 with a double, one RBI and one run scored for the Lady Falcons, who finished with eight hits. Parker drove in one run and Jo'Landa White (Sr./Leland, NC) had one RBI and one run scored. Zanni had one RBI.
Barton scored three runs in the first inning for a 3-0 lead. The Lady Falcons had not allowed a run in the previous four games.
The Lady Falcons closed within 3-1 in the top half of the second inning when Hill scored on a wild pitch. Barton scored three runs in the bottom half of the second for a 6-1 lead.
The Lady Falcons (14-10 overall) scored two runs in the third inning to slice the margin to 6-3. Zanni scored Noland on a sacrifice fly and Parker scored White on a single. They added one run in the fourth inning when White scored Jasmine Rios (Fr./Greensboro, NC) on a single.
Hill scored Noland on a single in the sixth inning to get the Lady Falcons within 6-5. The Lady Falcons never got the chance to bat in the seventh inning.
Rachel Jordan had one RBI and one run scored, and Sharpe scored two runs for Barton (15-23 overall). White was the winning pitcher after giving up four hits in 3.2 innings.
Hill took the loss for the Lady Falcons after pitching the first two innings. Hannah Stutts (Sr./Statesville, NC) shut down Barton in the final three innings. She allowed no hits and struck out two batters with no walks.
The Lady Falcons will visit the University of Mount Olive in a non-conference doubleheader in Mount Olive, N.C., on Thursday, April 16. The game times are 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. at Nancy Chapman Cassell Field.
