Women's Basketball Team Falls To Winston-Salem State In CIAA Southern Division Opener

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – Sycoya Dorsey (Jr./Richmond, VA) scored 12 points and Shanika Harris (Sr./Richmond, VA) added 10 points for Saint Augustine's University in a 74-41 CIAA women's basketball loss to Winston-Salem State University at the Gaines Center on Saturday, Jan. 16, 2016.

Ashanti Reid (Jr./Statesville, NC) added nine points for the Lady Falcons in the CIAA Southern Division opener. LaKiya Rouse (Sr./Greensboro, NC) finished with six points and five rebounds.

Led by two three-pointers from Harris, the Falcons trailed 13-6 entering the second quarter. The deficit was 30-16 at halftime, but the Lady Falcons closed the margin to 30-21 in the third quarter on two Reid free throws and a Harris three-pointer. The Lady Rams used their depth and size to pull away from the Lady Falcons the rest of the way.

The Lady Falcons were outrebounded 47-31 which led to the Lady Rams outscoring the visitors 20-5 in second chance points. The Lady Falcons were also outscored 40-19 in bench points.

Taylor Boyd led the Lady Rams (7-8 overall, 3-3 CIAA, 1-0 Southern Division) with 18 points and nine rebounds off the bench. Both Briana Arnold and Kandace Tate scored 12 points apiece.

The Lady Falcons (3-14, 0-7 CIAA, 0-1 Southern Division) will visit Johnson C. Smith University in Charlotte, N.C., on Wednesday, Jan. 20, 2016. Game time is 5:30 p.m. at Brayboy Gymnasium.
