Box Score RALEIGH, N.C. - Guard Sycoya Dorsey (Jr./Greenville, NC) poured in 24 points and grabbed 10 rebounds for Saint Augustine's University in a 56-48 CIAA women's basketball loss to Livingstone College on Senior Night at Emery Gymnasium on Wednesday, Feb. 17, 2016.
The double-double was the second straight for Dorsey, who had 20 points and 10 rebounds in a loss to Shaw University on Saturday, Feb. 13. The speedy guard also added two steals.
Dorsey provided the offensive firepower for the Lady Falcons, who won the second and third quarters to stay close with the Lady Blue Bears, who won the first matchup 104-58 in Salisbury, N.C., on Jan. 27. Behind 18-9 after the first quarter, the Lady Falcons outscored the visitors 16-14 in the second quarter to go into halftime trailing 32-25. Dorsey scored five points and guard Ke-Ashe Lee (So./Roanoke, VA) added four points.
The Lady Blue Bears stretched their margin to 47-33 after three quarters, but the Lady Falcons came right back in the fourth quarter. Down 16 points after a Livingstone bucket to begin the quarter, the Lady Falcons went on a 15-3 surge to chop their deficit to 52-48 with 1:32 left. Dorsey scored 12 points during the run.
The Lady Blue Bears secured the win by scoring the last four points. The Lady Falcons did outscore the visitors 15-9 in the fourth quarter.
Despite the loss, the Lady Falcons played one of their best games this season. The eight-point defeat was the second smallest margin of the season.
Spurred by Dorsey, the Lady Falcons outscored the Lady Blue Bears in fast break points 18-2. They also committed 13 turnovers, which is their second-lowest total this season.
The Lady Falcons outshot the Lady Blue Bears at the free throw line, making 16 of 25 attempts while the visitors made 9 of 16 attempts. They also controlled the offensive boards by a 23-17 margin. The Lady Blue Bears (5-4 Southern Division, 13-11 overall) shot a little better from the floor (30.3 percent to 21.4 percent) and hit more three-pointers (7-2) which made the difference. The Lady Blue Bears also totaled 10 blocks.
Guard Shelby Stokes (Sr./Cleveland, OH) snatched a career-high 13 rebounds and guard Shanika Harris (Sr./Richmond, VA) scored eight points in their last home games as Lady Falcons. After the contest, seniors Stokes, Harris and guard LaKiya Rouse (Greensboro, NC) were honored along with the men's basketball and cheerleading seniors from Saint Augustine's University. Guard Maya Presson (Pennsauken, NJ) is also part of the Lady Falcons' senior group but could not attend the contest and senior festivities.
Zena Lovette led the Lady Blue Bears with 19 points. Wendy Foster had nine points, 10 rebounds and nine blocks.
The Lady Falcons (0-9 Southern Division, 3-22 overall) visit Fayetteville State University in their final game of the regular season on Saturday, Feb. 20. The contest begins at 2 p.m. at Capel Arena in Fayetteville, N.C.
