Lady Falcons Post 2-1 Record On First Day of CIAA Softball Round-Up

RALEIGH, N.C. – Defending conference champion Saint Augustine's University upended Lincoln (Pa.) University 18-5 and Elizabeth City State University 9-4 but lost to Chowan University 15-2 on the first day of the CIAA Softball Round-Up at Walnut Creek Softball Complex on Friday, March 18, 2016.

The Lady Falcons were originally scheduled to play two games Friday, but the Chowan contest was moved back one day due to expected inclement weather on Saturday, March 19. The Round-Up is set to conclude Sunday, March 20.

The Round-Up started nicely for the Lady Falcons as they routed Lincoln in their early afternoon game. Led by two RBIs each from Korey Hill (Jr./Virginia Beach, VA) and Brittany Jamison (Fr./Summerville, SC), the Lady Falcons amassed 16 hits which was one off their season high.

Hill was 3-for-5 at the plate with a double and three runs scored in addition to her two RBIs. Marley Parker (So./Langley, British Columbia) was a perfect 4-for-4 with a double, triple, one RBI and four runs scored. Akera McPhaul (So./Greensboro, NC), who also got the pitching win, was 3-for-4 with a double, triple, an RBI and three runs scored, and Tyanna Peterson (Jr./Brooklyn Park, MN) was 2-for-3 with an RBI and two runs scored. Haili Pettifer (So./Langley, British Columbia) smacked a triple.

The Lady Falcons scored five runs in the top of the first inning to set the tone. They led 14-3 heading into the fourth inning and the outcome was decided in the sixth.

Their hitting carried over into the second game as the Lady Falcons amassed 12 hits against Elizabeth City State. Elizabeth City State took a 2-0 lead in the first inning, but the Lady Falcons quickly turned the momentum in their favor. They tied the score in the bottom half of the first inning and opened a 7-2 lead heading into the fourth inning.

Elizabeth City State scored two runs in the fifth inning to close within three runs, but the Lady Falcons scored once in the fifth and once in the sixth to finish off their opponent.

Jasmine Rios (So./Greensboro, NC) paced the Lady Falcons offensively. She was 3-for-5 with a home run, double, three RBIs and two runs scored. Pettifer was 2-for-4 with a homer, two RBIs and one run scored and Danielle Duckworth (Fr./Orange Park, FL) was 3-for-4 with one RBI and one run scored. Jamison was 2-for-4 with two runs scored and McPhaul hit a triple. Parker was the winning pitcher for the Lady Falcons.

The nightcap pitted the Lady Falcons against Chowan in a rematch of last season's championship game. Chowan started fast, taking a 6-0 lead in the first two innings. The Falcons got on the scoreboard in the third inning when Pettifer's single scored Mikayla Pettyjohn (Fr./Ragsdale, NC), but Chowan used a nine-run fourth inning to put the contest away. The Lady Falcons (2-1 CIAA, 3-14 overall) added a run in the fifth on McPhaul's single which scored Duckworth.

McPhaul and Pettifer each recorded an RBI and Duckworth hit a triple for the Lady Falcons, who managed four hits compared to seven for Chowan. Hill took the pitching loss.
