Box Score 2 RALEIGH, N.C. –Akera McPhaul (So./Greensboro, NC) provided the biggest highlight for Saint Augustine's University on the final day of the CIAA Softball Round-Up at Walnut Creek Softball Complex on Sunday, March 20, 2016.
McPhaul led off with an inside-the-park home run in a 12-3 loss to Virginia Union University. The Lady Falcons also lost 13-2 to Virginia State University.
The Lady Falcons led briefly against Virginia Union on McPhaul's homer in the top of the first inning. Virginia Union responded with four runs in the bottom of the inning.
The Lady Falcons closed within 4-2 in the top of the second inning. Mikayla Pettyjohn (Fr./Jamestown, NC) scored on an RBI groundout by Danielle Duckworth (Fr./Orange Park, FL). Virginia Union added four runs in the bottom of the second inning for an 8-2 lead.
The Lady Falcons scored their final run in the third inning. Jasmine Rios (So./Greensboro, NC) scored on an RBI single by Korey Hill (Jr./Virginia Beach, VA). Virginia Union scored one run in the fifth and three in the sixth for the final margin.
Rios led the Lady Falcons on 2-for-3 hitting with one run scored. Shaquandra Brown and Marisha Bates each knocked in three runs for Virginia Union.
McPhaul scored the Lady Falcons' first run in the second game on an RBI single by Haili Pettifer (So./Langley, British Columbia). Pettifer's single tied Virginia State 1-1 in the first inning.
Virginia State scored three runs in the top of the second inning. The Lady Falcons sliced the margin to 4-2 when Duckworth scored from third base after a dropped third strike led to a force-out at first base. Virginia State pulled away from the Lady Falcons with six runs in the fourth and three runs in the fifth.
Pettifer was 3-for-3 batting with one RBI and Marley Parker (So./Langley, British Columbia) was 2-for-2 for the Lady Falcons (2-4 CIAA, 3-17 overall). Verlisha Brandon was 2-for-4 with two RBIs and two runs scored for Virginia State.
The Lady Falcons are off until April 9 when they visit Johnson C. Smith University for a Southern Division doubleheader in Charlotte, N.C. Game times are 1 p.m. and 3 p.m.
