Lady Falcons Rout Paine 19-8 In Shaw Softball Challenge For Season’s First Win

RALEIGH, N.C. – Led by the trio of Jasmine Rios (So./Greensboro, NC), Tyanna Petersen (Jr./Brooklyn Park, MN) and Danielle Duckworth (Fr./Orange Park, FL), Saint Augustine's University pounded out a season-high 17 hits to trounce Paine College 19-8 on the first day of the Shaw Softball Challenge at the Walnut Creek Softball Complex on Friday, March 4, 2016. The win was the first this season for the Lady Falcons.

 

The victory followed an 8-0 loss to Mansfield University in the Lady Falcons' first game of the Classic. The Lady Falcons will meet Queens University of Charlotte at 1 p.m. and Fairmont State University at 4 p.m. on Saturday, March 5, the second day of the event. The price is $5 per day for general admission, $3 for senior citizens and free for children ages 12 and under. A $10 pass for the entire Challenge is also available.

 

The threesome of Rios, Petersen and Duckworth provided the bulk of the offense for the Lady Falcons (1-8 overall). Rios was 3-for-5 at the plate with two RBIs and two runs scored on a triple and two doubles. Peterson was 2-for-3 with three RBIs, one run scored and a double, and Danielle Duckworth (Fr./Orange Park, FL) was 3-for-4 with two RBIs and three runs scored.

 

Nine of the Lady Falcons' 10 batters recorded one or more RBIs. Marley Parker (So./Langley, British Columbia) was 2-for-4 with two RBIs, two runs scored and a double. Korey Hill (Jr./Virginia Beach, VA) was 2-for-3 with two RBIs, one run scored and a double, and Haili Pettifer (So./Langley, British Columbia) was 2-for-4 with one RBI, two runs scored and a double. As a team, the Lady Falcons totaled seven doubles and two triples.

 

Akera McPhaul (So./Greensboro, NC) and Meranda Zanni (Jr./Phoenix, OR) each knocked in two runs and scored twice for the Lady Falcons. Zanni hit a double and McPhaul smacked a triple against Paine (0-5 overall).

 

Rios set the tone for the blowout with a leadoff triple in the top of the first inning. Her triple was the start of an 11-run inning on 10 hits which put the Lady Falcons comfortably ahead. The highlight of the inning was Rios' triple and McPhaul's two-run triple. Both hits sailed to deep left field.

 

The Lady Falcons added two runs in the second inning and six runs in the third inning for a 19-0 lead. Paine scored three runs in the third inning and five runs in the fourth inning, but the game ended after the fifth inning due to the eight-run mercy rule.

 

Zanni was the winning pitcher after scattering seven hits in five innings. She allowed only two earned runs.

 

Maya Field drove in five of Paine's eight runs on 2-for-3 hitting with a triple and double. She also scored two runs.

 

In the first game, Rios and Parker were both 1-for-2 as the Lady Falcons' scratched out two hits. The Lady Falcons held Mansfield to three hits in five innings but walked 10 batters. Megan Miller and Ashley Inman both registered two RBIs for Mansfield (2-4 overall).
