Lady Falcons Nearly Pull Off Comeback In Softball Loss To Benedict

RALEIGH, N.C. – Saint Augustine's University mounted a late rally but fell 8-7 to Benedict College on the final day of the Shaw Softball Challenge at the Walnut Creek Softball Complex on Sunday, March 6.

Trailing 5-0, the Lady Falcons scored four runs in the sixth inning to get within 5-4. Benedict (6-10 overall) extended its lead to 8-4 in the top of the seventh but the Lady Falcons staged one last run.

Akera McPhaul (So./Greensboro, NC) hit an RBI double to score Mikayla Pettyjohn (So./Jamestown, NC) and McPhaul later scored on an error to get the Lady Falcons within 8-6. The deficit was trimmed to one after Jasmine Rios (So./Greensboro, NC) scored on an RBI groundout by Meranda Zanni (Jr./Phoenix, OR).

With two outs and runners on first and second, the Lady Falcons popped up to the first baseman to end the game.

Rios knocked in three runs and scored twice for the Lady Falcons (1-11 overall). Parker had two RBIs and McPhaul had one RBI and two runs scored. Zanni contributed an RBI and scored once.

The Lady Falcons climbed back in the game in the sixth inning behind Rios and Parker. Rios hit a two-run single to score McPhaul and Danielle Duckworth (Fr./Orange Park, FL), and Parker smacked a two-RBI single to score Zanni and Rios.

The Lady Falcons will play again March 16 in a doubleheader against the University of Mount Olive in Mount Olive, N.C. The starting time is 2 p.m. for the first game and 4 p.m. for the second game.
