Lady Falcons Host Winston-Salem State and Fayetteville State In Crucial CIAA Softball Doubleheaders This Weekend (April 23-24)

RALEIGH, N.C. - Saint Augustine's University will end the softball regular season with key CIAA matchups against Winston-Salem State University and Fayetteville State University at Worthdale Park this weekend. The Lady Falcons host Winston-Salem State on Saturday, April 23, and Fayetteville State on Sunday, April 24, in doubleheaders with starting times at 12 p.m. and 2 p.m. both days.

The doubleheaders will help determine seedings for the CIAA Softball Championships next weekend. The tournament will be held Thursday, April 28, through Saturday, April 30, at Walnut Creek Softball Complex in Raleigh, N.C.

The Lady Falcons enter this weekend tied for second with Winston-Salem State in the Southern Division at 4-2 while Fayetteville State is first at 5-1 and Johnson C. Smith University is fourth at 6-4. The top eight teams – four each from the Northern and Southern Divisions – advance to the CIAA Championships.

The Lady Falcons (8-20 overall), who are the defending Southern Division champs, will lean on the hitting of Marley Parker (So./Langley, British Columbia) and Akera McPhaul (So./Greensboro, NC) this weekend. Parker leads the CIAA and ranks third nationally in Division II in batting average (.500). McPhaul is tied for first in the CIAA in triples (5) and ranks sixth nationally in Division II in triples per game. Parker has hurled two no-hitters in her last three games.

Winston-Salem State (22-21 overall) is led by Mercedes Hargett, who is tied for the conference lead in pitching wins (14), ranks second in strikeouts (159) and ranks third in earned run average (2.83). Hargett is tied for fourth in the CIAA in home runs (4).

Fayetteville State (17-17 overall) is sparked by Alex Wickham and Carley Green. Wickham ranks second in home runs (6) and fifth in runs batted in (28) in the CIAA. Green ranks fourth in pitching wins (9), fifth in strikeouts (59) and fifth in earned run average (3.39) in the conference.
