Lady Falcons Host Fayetteville State Sunday (April 24) After Falling to Winston-Salem State in Softball Doubleheader Saturday

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2
RALEIGH, N.C. – Saint Augustine's University dropped both games to Winston-Salem State University in a CIAA softball doubleheader at Worthdale Park on Saturday, April 23, 2016. The scores were 12-3 in the first game and 4-1 in the second game.

The Lady Falcons are currently fourth in the Southern Division standings at 4-4, making Sunday's season-ending doubleheader against Fayetteville State University very important. The Lady Falcons host Fayetteville State at Worthdale Park at 12 p.m. and approximately 2 p.m. Admission is free.

The Lady Falcons are one game ahead of Shaw University (3-5 Southern Division) for the final Southern Division spot in the CIAA Softball Championships, which will be held April 28-30 at the Walnut Creek Softball Complex in Raleigh, N.C. Eight teams – the top four teams in the Northern and Southern Divisions – qualify for the tournament. Should the Lady Falcons tie Shaw for fourth place, the Lady Falcons would advance based on their doubleheader sweep against their crosstown rival.

Both contests against Winston-Salem State on Saturday were competitive. In the first game, the Lady Falcons trailed 6-3 heading into the seventh, but Winston-Salem State scored six runs in the top of the inning to pull away for the win.

Marley Parker (So./Langley, British Columbia) and Mikayla Pettyjohn (So./Jamestown, NC) each drove in a run for the Lady Falcons. Parker and Danyelle Duckworth (Fr./Orange Park, FL) were both 2-for-4 at the plate and Korey Hill (Jr./Virginia Beach, VA) was 3-for-3 with a double and two runs scored.

Destiny Snipes knocked in four runs for the Rams. The Lady Falcons had 10 hits and the Rams had 14 hits.

Winston-Salem State scored two runs in the top of the first inning. The Lady Falcons cut their deficit to 2-1 in the bottom half of the inning when Parker scored Meranda Zanni (Jr./Phoenix, OR) on an RBI single.

Winston-Salem State added two runs in the second inning, but the Lady Falcons slice the score to 4-2 in the same inning when Hill scored on a passed ball. The Rams (24-21 overall) tacked on a run in the third and fourth innings to increase their lead to 6-2.

The Lady Falcons (8-22 overall) scored in the sixth when Pettyjohn singled in Hill. They would get no closer, however.

In the second game, the Lady Falcons took a 1-0 lead in the first inning when Haili Pettifer (So./Langley, British Columbia) scored Duckworth on an RBI single. The Rams tied the game in the second inning and scored two runs in the fourth and one in the seventh for the win.

Parker was 2-for-3 and Duckworth was 2-for-2 with one run scored for the Lady Falcons. Snipes was 2-for-3 with one RBI and one run scored for the Rams. The Lady Falcons had six hits and the Rams finished with nine hits.
