Box Score 2 RALEIGH, N.C. – Saint Augustine's University concluded the softball regular season by falling to Fayetteville State University 11-0 and 14-4 at Worthdale Park on Sunday, April 24, 2016.
Despite the losses, the Lady Falcons will qualify for the CIAA Softball Championships this week as the No. 4 Southern Division seed. They will likely face Northern Division top-seed Chowan University in a first round game on Thursday, April 28, at a time to be determined. The site of the double-elimination tournament is the Walnut Creek Softball Complex in Raleigh, N.C.
In the first game, Meranda Zanni (Jr./Virginia Beach, VA) was 2-for-2 at the plate for the Lady Falcons. Zoe Howard and Shi-Cara Goins each had two RBIs for Fayetteville State.
In the second game, the Lady Falcons (4-6 Southern Division, 8-24 overall) scored all four runs in the second inning. Tyanna Petersen (Jr./Brooklyn Park, MN) scored Korey Hill (Jr./Virginia Beach, VA) on an RBI single and Danyelle Duckworth (Fr./Orange Park, FL) scored Mikayla Pettyjohn (Fr./Jamestown, NC) on an RBI single. Both Petersen and Duckworth scored on an infield error to trim Fayetteville State's lead to 6-4. Fayetteville State, which clinched the Southern Division title, scored three runs in the third inning and five runs in the fifth inning for the win.
Duckworth, Pettyjohn and Petersen were each 1-for-2 with one run scored. Pettyjohn's hit was a double. Shae Barnes, Alex Wickham and Carley Green each had three RBIs for Fayetteville State (9-1 Southern Division, 21-17 overall).
