Box Score Maiya Gibson Leads Three Double-Figure Scorers With 14 Points For The Lady Falcons
RALEIGH, NC (Jan 14) – On Saturday, Maiya Gibson (Jr./Randallstown, MD) scored a career-high 14 points as Saint Augustine's University played valiantly in a 70-69 CIAA women's basketball loss to Winston-Salem State University at Emery Gymnasium.
Shakeisha Washington (Sr./Atlanta, GA) added 12 points and Kamya Renwicks (Fr./Baltimore, MD) tallied 10 points, five rebounds and four assists for the Lady Falcons, who shot a season-high 47.7 percent. The Lady Falcons rode their hot shooting to a 37-26 halftime lead and led 67-66 with one minute left on a layup by Paulette Addison (Jr./Wilmington, NC), who finished with nine points.
The Rams (1-0 Southern Division, 2-3 CIAA, 6-9 overall) outscored the Lady Falcons 4-2 the rest of the way to steal the win. Brionna Pate had 14 points and 12 rebounds, Taylor Boyd scored 12 points and Trei Torain added 11 points for the Rams.
Gibson and Addison each scored seven points as the Lady Falcons took charge in the first half. They opened a 15-10 lead in the first period and stretched it to an 11-point lead at the break. The Lady Falcons led at halftime for the first time since Dec. 3, 2016 when they defeated Voorhees College 61-53 in the Red & White Classic hosted by Winston-Salem State.
The Rams roared back in the third period, outscoring the Lady Falcons 28-9 for a 54-46 lead. The Lady Falcons didn't wilt, however, as they rallied to tie the game at 63-63 late in the fourth period on a nifty scoop layup by Renwicks.
After falling behind by three points, the Lady Falcons came back to take the lead on Addison's layup. The Lady Falcons had possession with the lead after a rebound but missed on the other end. The Rams converted a three-point play for a 69-67 lead with 26 seconds left and added a free throw with 8.6 seconds remaining for a three-point lead following a Lady Falcons turnover.
The Lady Falcons (0-1 Southern Division, 0-7 CIAA, 3-16 overall) had a chance to tie the game after drawing a foul on a three-point shot with 2.8 seconds left. They made two of three free throw attempts for the final margin.
The Lady Falcons will host Johnson C. Smith University on Wednesday, Jan. 18 in the last of six straight home games. Game time is 5:30 p.m. at Emery Gymnasium.
