SAU Forces 40 Turnovers In 74-62 Women's Basketball Win Over Nationally-Ranked Benedict

RALEIGH, N.C. (Nov. 18) – Saint Augustine's University forced 40 turnovers to rally from a first-half deficit in a 74-62 women's basketball victory over nationally-ranked Benedict College in the WSSU Red & White Classic at the Gaines Center in Winston-Salem, N.C., on Saturday.

The Lady Falcons upped their record to 2-1 overall after the impressive win. They face Central State University on Sunday, Nov. 19, at 2 p.m. on the final day of the Red & White Classic, hosted by Winston-Salem State University.

Benedict, ranked 25th in the Preseason WBCA NCAA Division II Top 25 Coaches Poll, fell to 0-2 overall. The Lady Tigers, who are the two-time defending SIAC conference champions, have appeared in the last four NCAA Division II Tournaments.

The turnovers were the most by a Lady Falcons' opponent since 2011 when the University of Virginia-Lynchburg committed 43 turnovers. The Lady Falcons held a whopping 39-16 scoring advantage in turnover points to swing the game their way. They outscored the Lady Tigers 27-7 in turnover points in the second half.

The Lady Falcons took control with their defense after falling behind 18-9 at the end of the first quarter. The Lady Tigers held a 12-point lead (25-13) midway in the second quarter before the Lady Falcons turned up the pressure.

Down 31-25 at halftime, the Lady Falcons outscored the Lady Tigers 26-16 to move ahead 51-47 at the end of the third quarter. They scored 15 points off 12 Benedict turnovers and nailed four three-pointers in the quarter, after none in the first half, to surge ahead. The margin stretched to 11 points four times in the fourth period, including a 69-58 lead on a layup by Kelsee Arnold (Jr./Fayetteville, GA) with 1:46 remaining.

Kaaliya Williams (So./Richmond, VA) scored 14 points to pace four double-figure scorers for the Lady Falcons. Arnold added 12 points and four steals, and Kamya Renwicks (So./Baltimore, MD) totaled 10 points, five assists and four steals for the Lady Falcons, who collected 15 steals.

Tomisha Davis (Sr./New Bern, NC) tallied 10 points, six rebounds and two blocks, and Quiera Gilmore (So./Charlotte, NC) scored eight points and had two steals off the bench. Angela Caraballo (So./Richmond, VA) finished with seven points and three steals, and Bianca Igwe (Jr./Tampa, FL) had 10 rebounds in addition to five points.

Essence Stinnette scored 11 points for Benedict, which made 12 of 25 free throw attempts for 48 percent. Ay'Anna Bey posted a unique triple-double with 10 points, 11 rebounds and 12 turnovers.
