Late Rally Falls Short In SAU Women's Basketball Loss To Central State

RALEIGH, N.C. (Nov. 19) – The Saint Augustine's University women's basketball team mounted a furious comeback in the fourth period to chop an 18-point deficit to two, but Central State University held off the Lady Falcons 88-73 in the WSSU Red & White Classic at the Gaines Center in Winston-Salem, N.C., on Sunday.

Despite the loss, the Lady Falcons were impressive in posting a 1-1 record in the Red & White Classic including a 74-62 victory over nationally-ranked Benedict College on Saturday. The Lady Falcons (2-2 overall) are already one win away from reaching last season's victory total.


Angela Caraballo (So./Richmond, VA) scored a game-high 22 points for the Lady Falcons including 10 points during an 18-2 run in a five-minute stretch to trim a 67-49 deficit to 69-67 with 4:19 remaining in the final period. After the Lady Marauders scored, Kelsee Arnold (Jr./Fayetteville, GA) converted a layup to get the Lady Falcons within two again at 71-69 with 3:31 left.

The Lady Marauders responded with a run of their own to clinch the win, outscoring the Lady Falcons 17-4 down the stretch including 8 of 8 shooting from the free throw line. For the game, the Lady Marauders connected on 27 of 36 free throw attempts for 75 percent while the Lady Falcons made 10 of 17 free throw attempts for 58.8 percent.

Arnold added 15 points, five rebounds and three steals, and Kaaliya Williams (So./Richmond, VA) collected 13 points and seven rebounds for the Lady Falcons, who shot 44.6 percent from the floor and outscored the Lady Marauders in inside points (36-24). Kamya Renwicks (So./Baltimore, MD) totaled eight points.

The Lady Falcons shot 53.6 percent in the second half to rally from two double-digit deficits, but they couldn't overcome Central State's success at the free throw line and the three-point arc. The Lady Marauders hit 11 of 22 three-pointers for 50 percent compared to 5 of 13 for 38.5 percent for the Lady Falcons. Central State also won the rebounding battle (45-39) and outscored the Lady Falcons in turnover points (28-17).

Takyra Gilbert led four double-figure scorers with 19 points for Central State (3-2 overall). Jaeda Davis added 18 points, seven rebounds and five assists.

The Lady Falcons will play again in two days when they visit Clark Atlanta University in Atlanta, Ga., on Tuesday, Nov. 21. Tip-off is 5:30 p.m.
