SAU Women's Basketball Hangs Tough In Loss To Virginia State

Box Score
RALEIGH, N.C. (Dec. 15) – The Saint Augustine's University women's basketball team played inspired ball against unbeaten Virginia State University at Emery Gymnasium on Thursday, Dec. 14.

The Lady Falcons pushed the regionally-ranked Trojans to the limit before falling 70-58 in the CIAA opener. The game was closer than the score indicated as the Lady Falcons stood toe-to-toe with the Northern Division contender for much of the contest.

The Trojans tried to pull away but the Lady Falcons fought back on several occasions. A 15-point third-period deficit was narrowed to seven points at 54-47 in the final five minutes of the third period. The visitors only managed to pull away after the Lady Falcons went through a scoring drought for nearly the first six minutes of the fourth period.

The Trojans (1-0 CIAA, 10-0 overall) were bothered by the Lady Falcons' defense as they shot 31.6 percent from the floor and committed 25 turnovers. Free throws bailed them out as they made 25 of 36 for 69.4 percent.

Miscues also hindered the Lady Falcons (0-1 CIAA, 3-7 overall) on offense as they turned the ball over 24 times and shot 12 of 19 from the free throw line for 63.2 percent. They were outrebounded 43-33 but their 39.6 percent shooting was higher than the Trojans. The Lady Falcons were even better offensively in the first and third periods as they shot 54.5 percent and 64.3 percent, respectively.

Quiera Gilmore (So./Charlotte, NC) and Kaaliya Williams (So./Richmond, VA) each scored 13 points for the Lady Falcons. Kelsee Arnold (Jr./Fayetteville, GA) added 11 points and Kamya Renwicks (So./Baltimore, MD) totaled eight assists, six rebounds and two steals to go along with four points. Angela Caraballo (So./Richmond, VA) added six points for the Lady Falcons while Mia Fitts paced four double-figure scorers with 17 points for the Trojans, ranked sixth in the D2SIDA Atlantic Region Poll
.

The Lady Falcons will host Elizabeth City State University at Emery Gymnasium on Saturday, Dec. 16, at 2 p.m. They anticipate a much better showing at home than the first meeting against the Lady Vikings, who won a non-conference matchup on a neutral floor 73-55 in Fayetteville, N.C.,  on Nov. 25.
