RALEIGH, NC (Feb 4) – On Saturday, Kaaliya Williams (Fr./Richmond, VA) scored 18 points and Quiera Gilmore (R-Fr./Charlotte, NC) added 10 points as Saint Augustine's University nearly stunned Winston-Salem State University 57-51 in a CIAA women's basketball loss at the Gaines Center in Winston-Salem, N.C.
The Lady Falcons appeared to be headed toward their first CIAA victory of the season after outscoring the Rams 16-9 in the third period for a 40-35 lead entering the fourth period. But the Rams, tied for first in the Southern Division, outscored the Lady Falcons 22-11 in the final period to pull out the win.
The Lady Falcons played the Rams close in both meetings this season. In the first contest on Jan. 14, the Lady Falcons led 37-26 at halftime in a 70-69 loss in Raleigh, N.C.
Williams was superb offensively for the Lady Falcons on Saturday. She was 5-for-8 from the floor, 2-for-2 from three-point range and 6-for-6 from the free throw line. The standout freshman also added five rebounds, two assists, one block and one steal.
Shakeisha Washington (Sr./Atlanta, GA) and Kiana Clark (Fr./Queens, NY) each added eight points for the Lady Falcons. The top free throw shooting team in the conference, the Lady Falcons connected on 16 of 21 free throws for 76.2 percent.
Briana Arnold paced the Rams (5-1 Southern Division, 12-10 overall) with 14 points and Kandace Tate added 13 points. The Rams outrebounded the Lady Falcons 17-4 on the offensive glass for a 13-3 advantage in second chance points.
The Lady Falcons (0-6 Southern Division, 3-21 overall) are back on the road Wednesday, Feb. 8 against Johnson C. Smith University in Charlotte, N.C. Tip-off is 5:30 p.m.
