Lady Falcons Total 29 Hits In Easy Victories Over Elizabeth City State And Bowie State
CHARLOTTE, NC (March 17) – On Friday, Saint Augustine's University amassed 29 hits combined in trouncing Elizabeth City State University 9-1 and Bowie State University 14-2 on the first day of the CIAA Softball Round-Up at Nevin Community Park. The Lady Falcons collected three home runs and three triples in the victories.
The Lady Falcons (2-0 CIAA, 6-8 overall) pounded out 18 hits against Bowie State in their second game of the day. Akera McPhaul (Jr./Greensboro, NC) and Tamiera Sanchez (Fr./Sacramento, CA) led the way for the Lady Falcons as they both knocked in three runs. McPhaul was 3-for-3 with a home run, two doubles, three RBIs and three runs scored and Sanchez (Fr./Sacramento, CA) was 4-for-4 with a double, three RBIs and three runs scored.
Marley Parker (Jr./Langley, British Columbia) was 2-for-2 with a double, sacrifice fly and two RBIs and Korey Hill (Sr./Virginia Beach, VA) was 2-for-3 with two RBIs and two runs scored. Makayla August (Fr./Palm Springs, FL) was 1-for-3 with a triple, two RBIs and two runs scored.
After a scoreless first inning, the Lady Falcons exploded in the second and third innings. Hill started the scoring with a single in the second inning which scored Haley Sessoms (Fr./Kenansville, NC) and Sanchez hit a two-run double to score Hill and McPhaul. Sanchez later scored in the second on a double by Jasmine Rios (Jr./Greensboro, NC) for a 4-0 lead.
In the third inning, Hill scored August on an RBI bunt single and McPhaul broke the game open with a three-run homer over the right center field fence to score Hill, Meranda Zanni (Sr./Phoenix, OR) and herself. Parker scored Sanchez with a single for a 9-0 Lady Falcons lead.
The Lady Falcons continued their onslaught in the fifth inning after Bowie State scored once in the third. Sanchez singled in McPhaul and she later scored on Parker's sacrifice fly. Haili Pettifer (Jr./Langley, British Columbia) scored Rios on a single and August hit an RBI triple to score Aquillia Rozier (Fr./Fayetteville, NC). August scored on the play for a 14-1 lead. Bowie State (1-1 CIAA, 3-7 overall) scored once in the fifth for the final margin.
August pitched a good game for the Lady Falcons, allowing three hits and striking out four in five innings for the win. Ja'seph Smith led Bowie State with two RBIs.
Parker was the star in the first game as she belted two home runs against Elizabeth City State. She smacked a two-run inside-the-park homer in the third inning and a two-run homer over the center field fence in the fourth.
For the contest, Parker was 3-for-3 with two home runs, four RBIs and three runs scored. Rios was 2-for-3 with a triple, one RBI and two runs scored and Sanchez was 2-for-3 with two doubles, one RBI and one run scored for the Lady Falcons, who had 11 hits.
Parker started the scoring for the Lady Falcons when she crossed home plate on an infield error in the first inning. The Lady Vikings tied the score 1-1 in the second inning but Rios put the Lady Falcons ahead 2-1 in the third inning on a single which scored Sanchez. Parker padded the lead to 4-1 with her home run which scored her and Rios.
The Lady Falcons finished off the Lady Vikings (0-1 CIAA, 1-13 overall) with five runs in the fourth inning. Pettifer scored on a McPhaul RBI groundout and Sanchez scored Hill on a double. Parker hit her second home run to score her and Rios and August scored Zanni on a triple.
Zanni picked up the win after giving up two hits and striking out six with two walks in five innings. Her pitching record is 3-0.
The Lady Falcons are back on the field Saturday, March 18 at the Round-Up. They take on Virginia Union University at 11 a.m. and Lincoln (Pa.) University at 3 p.m. at Nevin Community Park.
