Makayla August Fires No-Hitter In First Game; Lady Falcons Amass Season-High 21 Hits In Second Game
RALEIGH, NC (April 1) – On Saturday, Makayla August (Palm Springs, CA) tossed a no-hitter in the first game and Jasmine Rios (Jr./Greensboro, NC) knocked in five runs in the second game as Saint Augustine's University swept Johnson C. Smith University 2-1 and 23-3 in its CIAA Southern Division softball opener at Lions Park.
The Lady Falcons improved to 2-0 in the Southern Division, 5-1 in the CIAA and 9-9 overall. The Golden Bulls dropped to 0-2 in the division, 4-4 in the CIAA and 9-12 overall.
The Falcons amassed 29 hits combined in both games including a season-high 21 hits in the second contest. They totaled eight hits in the first game including a walk-off single by Haili Pettifer (Jr./Langley, British Columbia) in the seventh inning which scored Akera McPhaul (Jr./Greensboro, NC) for the winning run.
August (5-3 pitching record) struck out three and walked four in seven complete innings for her first collegiate no-hitter. Despite her pitching performance, the Lady Falcons had four errors including an error in the fourth inning which allowed the Golden Bulls to tie the score 1-1. The Lady Falcons took a 1-0 lead in the second inning when Haley Sessoms (Fr./Kenansville, NC) smacked an RBI triple to score August.
Sessoms batted 2-for-3 with a double, triple and one RBI for the Lady Falcons. August batted 2-for-3 with a double, triple and one run scored.
The Falcons exploded offensively in the second game. They scored nine runs in the second inning for a 9-1 lead and 12 runs in the fourth inning for the final score 23-3.
Rios was a perfect 4-for-4 at the plate with a triple and three runs scored in addition to her five RBIs. Meranda Zanni (Sr./Phoenix, OR) was also 4-for-4 with a double, four RBIs and two runs scored. August recorded a triple, three RBIs and two runs scored and Sessoms was 3-for-4 with a triple, two RBIs and three runs scored. Tamiera Sanchez (Fr./Sacramento, CA) was 2-for-3 with a double, home run, two RBIs and four runs scored and Korey Hill (Sr./Virginia Beach, VA) was 2-for-3 with a double, one RBI and three runs scored.
Marley Parker (Jr./Langley, British Columbia) was the winning pitcher for the Lady Falcons. She scattered seven hits, struck out six and walked five in five innings.
Tia Mahoney was 2-for-3 with one RBI and one run scored for the Golden Bulls. Randaisha Daniels was 1-for-1 with a triple and one run scored.
The Lady Falcons are back in action Sunday, April 2 when they host Livingstone College in a CIAA Southern Division doubleheader at Lions Park. Games times are 12 p.m. and approximately 2 p.m.
