Lady Falcons Total 34 Hits And 39 RBIs In Blowouts; Meranda Zanni Throws No-Hitter In First Game
RALEIGH, NC (April 2) – On Sunday, Meranda Zanni (Sr./Phoenix, OR) fired a no-hitter, Korey Hill (Sr./Virginia Beach, VA) threw a one-hitter and Saint Augustine's University (SAU) accumulated 34 hits to trounce Livingstone College 20-0 and 23-1 in a CIAA softball doubleheader at Lions Park to extend its winning streak to five games. The Lady Falcons have scored 66 runs, produced 55 hits and tallied 59 RBIs in their last three contests.
The Lady Falcons are tied for first in the CIAA Southern Division at 4-0 and are 11-9 overall. Livingstone is 0-4 in the division and 1-13 overall.
SAU continued its offensive onslaught from Saturday, April 1 when the Lady Falcons pounded Johnson C. Smith University 23-3 in the second game of a doubleheader. On Sunday, they wasted no time in dismantling the Blue Bears.
In the first game, the Lady Falcons opened an 8-0 lead in the first inning and extended the margin to 11-0 in the second inning. The Lady Falcons weren't through, however, as they scored seven runs in the third inning for an 18-0 lead. They tacked on two runs in the fourth inning for the final score.
The Lady Falcons collected 18 hits including five triples in addition to 18 RBIs against the Blue Bears. Akera McPhaul (Jr./Greensboro, NC) led the Lady Falcons offensively. She was 3-for-4 at the plate with a triple, four RBIs and two runs scored.
Makayla August (Fr./Palm Springs, CA) was 3-for-3 with a double, three RBIs and three runs scored and Meranda Zanni (Sr./Phoenix, OR) was 3-for-4 with a triple, three RBIs and two runs scored. Jasmine Rios (Jr./Greensboro, NC) had a triple, two RBIs and two runs scored and Haili Pettifer (Jr./Langley, British Columbia) was 2-for-3 with a triple, two RBIs and three runs scored.
Marley Parker (Jr./Langley, British Columbia) was 2-for-4 with a double, one RBI and two runs scored. Tamiera Sanchez (Fr./Sacramento, CA) was 2-for-4 with a triple, one RBI and three runs scored.
Zanni held the Blue Bears hitless in improving to 4-0 as a pitcher. She finished with seven strikeouts and no walks in five innings. This is the second straight day that a Lady Falcons pitcher has tossed a no-hitter.
In the second game, the Lady Falcons totaled 16 hits and 21 RBIs. Rios led the Lady Falcons by batting 3-for-4 with a double, triple and home run in addition to six RBIs and three runs scored. She was a single away from hitting for the cycle.
Haley Sessoms (Fr./Kenansville, NC) was 4-for-4 with a double, triple, four RBIs and one run scored and Sanchez had two RBIs and five runs scored. Parker was 1-for-2 with a triple, two RBIs and two runs scored and Pettifer was 1-for-1 with a double, two RBIs and two runs scored. Zanni was 2-for-2 with two doubles, two RBIs and one run scored.
Hill only allowed one earned run for her first pitching win of the season. She had seven strikeouts and six walks in addition to giving up one hit.
Like the first game, the Lady Falcons started fast. They took a 12-1 lead in the first inning and pushed their lead to 14-1 in the second inning. The Lady Falcons exploded for nine runs in the fourth inning for the final margin.
The Lady Falcons are off until Saturday, April 8 when they host archrival Shaw University in a doubleheader at Worthdale Park in Raleigh, N.C. Game times are 12 p.m. and 2 p.m. Admission is free.
