SAU Softball Plays For CIAA Southern Division Title Sunday

Lady Falcons Face Fayetteville State In Doubleheader At Fayetteville's Seabrook Park

RALEIGH, NC (April 29) – On Sunday, April 30, Saint Augustine's University visits Fayetteville State University in a CIAA softball doubleheader for the league's Southern Division title at Seabrook Park in Fayetteville, N.C. Game times are 12 p.m. and 2 p.m.

The Lady Falcons (7-1 Southern Division, 15-10 overall) are tied for first in the division with the Lady Broncos (7-1 Southern Division, 19-15 overall). Both teams need a sweep to win the title outright. If both teams split Sunday, they would be crowned co-champions.

In case of a split, the criteria for determining the division's top seed in next week's CIAA Tournament is as follows: head-to-head competition, margin of victory in head-to-head competition, CIAA record and coin toss. The Lady Broncos are 12-2 in the CIAA with two games left and the Lady Falcons are 11-2 in the CIAA with three games left.

The Lady Falcons, looking for their second division title in three years, are fourth nationally in Division II in batting average (.360), runs per game (8.0), doubles per game (2.0) and slugging percentage (.576). Haley Sessoms (Fr./Kenansville, NC) leads the CIAA in batting average (.447) and Akera McPhaul (Jr./Greensboro, NC) is fifth (.419).

Jasmine Rios (Jr./Greensboro, NC) is the NCAA Division II national leader in triples per game while Makayla August (Fr./Palm Springs, CA) is second and McPhaul ninth. Meranda Zanni (Sr./Phoenix, OR) is 5-1 as a pitcher.

For the Lady Broncos, Maggie Smith is tied for fourth in the CIAA in RBIs (30) and fifth in home runs (6). Carley Green, 8-4 as a pitcher, is third in the CIAA in earned run average (2.56) and Kyrin Walker is fifth (3.13). Walker is the league co-leader in saves (1).

The doubleheader was originally scheduled April 23 but was postponed to Sunday due to inclement weather.
