Hot-Hitting SAU Softball Hosts Crosstown Rival Shaw In Doubleheader On Senior Day Saturday

Games Start At 12 P.M. And 2 P.M. At Worthdale Park

 

RALEIGH, NC (April 6) – On Saturday, April 8, Saint Augustine's University will host crosstown rival Shaw University in a CIAA softball doubleheader at Lions Park on Senior Day. Starting times are 12 p.m. and approximately 2 p.m. for the twinbill which is free and open to the public.

 

The Lady Falcons (7-1 CIAA, 11-9 overall), winners of five consecutive games, are first in the Southern Division at 4-0. The Lady Bears (4-5 CIAA, 6-23 overall) are tied for third in the division at 2-2.

 

Three Lady Falcons seniors will be honored between the first and second games. They are Korey Hill (Virginia Beach, VA), Tyanna Petersen (Brooklyn Park, MN) and Meranda Zanni (Phoenix, OR).

 

The Lady Falcons enter the doubleheader as one of the nation's hottest hitting teams. They rank seventh in Division II in batting average (.363), first in triples per game (1.05) and fourth in runs per game (8.2) and slugging percentage (.583). They have scored 20 or more runs and recorded 16 or more hits in three straight games.

 

Makayla August (Fr./Palm Springs, CA) ranks first in Division II in triples per game (0.35) and second in total triples (7). Jasmine Rios (Jr./Greensboro, NC) ranks second in Division II in triples per game (0.33) and 10th in runs batted in per game (1.33) and total triples (5). Tamiera Sanchez (Fr./Sacramento, CA) ranks 12th in Division II in runs per game (1.23).

 

In the CIAA, Haley Sessoms (Fr./Kenansville, NC) leads the conference in batting average (.443) and is tied for fourth in steals (8). Both Rios and Haili Pettifer (Jr./Langley, British Columbia) are tied for fourth in batting average (.429) and Zanni is 4-0 as a pitcher. August has a 5-3 pitching record for the Lady Falcons.

 

Akera McPhaul (Jr./Greensboro, NC) ranks seventh in the CIAA in batting average (.426) and Marley Parker (Jr./Langley, British Columbia) is eighth (.417) in the league in the same category. Five Lady Falcons rank among the CIAA's top 10 hitters in batting average.

 

Kiana Rogers leads the Lady Bears with a .293 batting average. Brittany Kline is the team's second-leading batter at .267.
