Box Score 2 Seniors Korey Hill, Tyanna Petersen And Meranda Zanni Were Honored Between Games
RALEIGH, NC (April 8) – On Saturday, Saint Augustine's University swept crosstown rival Shaw University 12-0 and 6-3 in a CIAA softball doubleheader on Lady Falcons Senior Day at Lions Park. Three seniors – Korey Hill (Virginia Beach, VA), Tyanna Petersen (Brooklyn Park, MN) and Meranda Zanni (Phoenix, OR) – were honored between games.
The Lady Falcons (8-1 CIAA, 13-9 overall) sit atop the CIAA Southern Division standings at 6-0. The Lady Bears (4-6 CIAA, 6-25 overall) fell to 2-4 in the division.
In the first game, the Lady Falcons outhit the Lady Bears 12-1. Jasmine Rios (Jr./Greensboro, NC) led the way offensively, batting 2-for-3 with a double, triple, three RBIs and two runs scored. Haley Sessoms (Fr./Kenansville, NC) batted 2-for-3 with a home run, two RBIs and one run scored and Marley Parker (Jr./Langley, British Columbia) was 1-for-2 with a sacrifice fly, two RBIs and one run scored.
Akera McPhaul (Jr./Greensboro, NC) was 2-for-3 with an RBI and two runs scored and Haili Pettifer (Jr./Langley, British Columbia) was 2-for-3 with a double, one RBI and one run scored. Tamiera Sanchez (Fr./Sacramento, CA) was 2-for-3 with an RBI and two runs scored and Zanni was 1-for-3 with a double and two runs scored.
Zanni hurled a one-hitter to improve to 5-0 as a pitcher. She struck out three batters and walked none in five innings.
The Lady Falcons broke the game open in the third inning. Leading 4-0 heading into the bottom third, they scored eight runs to turn the contest into a rout.
In the second game, the Lady Falcons jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning. Parker scored Rios on an RBI single and Makayla August (Fr./Palm Springs, CA) scored Pettifer on an RBI single.
The Lady Bears scored in the third inning and the Lady Falcons countered with three runs in the fourth inning. Hill scored Zanni on an RBI double and McPhaul scored Hill on an RBI triple and advanced home on the hit for a 5-1 Lady Falcons lead.
The Lady Bears scored once in the fifth and the Lady Falcons added a run in the sixth for a 6-2 lead. Sanchez scored McPhaul on an RBI triple in the inning. The Lady Bears scored the final run in the seventh.
McPhaul batted 2-for-3 with a triple, two RBIs and two runs scored to spark the Lady Falcons, who had 13 hits. Hill was 2-for-3 with a double, one RBI and one run scored and Parker was 2-for-4 with one RBI. Sessoms was 2-for-3 with a double. Amanda Ortiz was 2-for-4 with one RBI for the Lady Bears.
August fired a four-hitter to up her pitching record to 6-3 for the Lady Falcons. She recorded three strikeouts, three walks and one earned run in seven innings.
