SAU Women's Basketball Falls To Shaw 83-82 In Overtime

RALEIGH, N.C. (Feb. 16) – Kaaliya Williams (So./Richmond, VA) scored 24 points to lead four players in double figures as Saint Augustine's University pushed Shaw University to the limit before losing 83-82 in overtime of a CIAA women's basketball game at Spaulding Gymnasium on Friday.

The loss dropped the Lady Falcons into a fourth-place tie with their crosstown rival in the Southern Division. Both teams are 2-6 with two games left in the regular season.


Williams was 9 of 15 from the floor including 3 of 5 from three-point range. Among the nation's top Division II free throw shooters, she was a perfect 3 of 3 from the charity stripe.

Tomisha Davis (Sr./New Bern, NC) added a career-high 15 points and Quiera Gilmore (R-So./Charlotte, NC) tallied 13 points for the Lady Falcons, who outscored the Lady Bears 30-20 in the paint and 19-15 in turnover points. Kiana Clark (So./Queens, NY) contributed 11 points for the Lady Falcons.

The Lady Bears (6-20 overall) appeared to take control several times, but the Lady Falcons kept climbing back in the contest including late in regulation. The Lady Falcons trailed 67-58 with 3:12 left but outscored the Lady Bears 12-3 to force the extra session at 70-70. Williams scored five of her 20 second-half points during the run and blocked a shot as time expired in the fourth period.

The Lady Falcons fell behind 75-70 in overtime but Ke-Ashe Lee (Sr./Roanoke, VA) nailed a three-pointer and assisted on a Gilmore layup to knot the score at 75-75. Down 80-77, the Falcons missed a chance to tie the score again when the Lady Bears snatched an offensive rebound and made two free throws for a five-point lead with 16.4 seconds remaining.

Davis hit a jumper to slice the deficit to three points, but the Lady Bears connected on one of two free throws with 5.5 seconds left for an 83-79 lead. Clark nailed a three as time expired for the final score.

LaQuisha Taylor sparked the Lady Bears with 21 points. Klintisha Martin added 15 points and Tahniya Sweatt chipped in 11 points for the Lady Bears, who won the rebounding battle 56-44 and outscored the Lady Falcons 49-38 in bench points.

Gilmore scored seven points and Angela Caraballo (So./Richmond, VA) added five points in the first half for the Lady Falcons, who trailed by 11 points in the second period. The Lady Falcons (6-17 overall) scored five points in the final 2:24 of the period to enter halftime behind 34-28.

Both games in the season series were thrilling this year as the Lady Falcons won the first matchup 61-59 at Emery Gymnasium on Jan. 24. They almost swept the Lady Bears for the first time since the 2008-09 season.

The Lady Falcons host their final home game of the season on Wednesday, Feb. 21, against Livingstone College at Emery Gymnasium. Tipoff is 5:30 p.m.
