Home Runs Help SAU Softball Slip Past Bowie State In CIAA Round-Up

RALEIGH, N.C. (March 17) – Saint Augustine's University came back from a two-run deficit to edge Bowie State University 5-4 in the CIAA Softball Round-Up on Saturday at South Park Complex in Elizabeth City, N.C. Earlier in the day, the Lady Falcons fell to Chowan University 12-3.

Akera McPhaul (Sr./Greensboro, NC) and Marley Parker (Sr./Langley, British Columbia) both homered late to erase a 4-2 Bowie State lead. McPhaul smacked a solo homer over the left field fence in the fifth inning and Parker hit a two-run shot over the center field fence in the sixth inning. Her homer put the Lady Falcons ahead for good.


MaKayla August (So./Palm Springs, CA) scattered nine hits in seven complete innings for the win. She improved to 5-3 as a pitcher.

August recorded an RBI double in the first inning and McPhaul had an RBI groundout in the second inning for a 2-0 Lady Falcons lead. Bowie State (3-6 overall, 2-2 CIAA) surged ahead 4-2 heading into the fifth inning before the Lady Falcons rallied.

Tamiera Sanchez (So./Sacramento, CA) batted 2-for-3 and with two runs scored for the Lady Falcons (6-6 overall, 3-1 CIAA). The trio of Parker, McPhaul and Haley Sessoms (So./Kenansville, NC) each scored a run.

In the first game, the Lady Falcons stayed close early before Chowan erupted on offense. The Hawks (15-8 overall, 4-0 CIAA) scored 11 runs between the third and fifth innings to stop the Lady Falcons.

Parker batted 1-for-1 with one RBI and one run scored against the Hawks. August was 2-for-3 with a double and RBI, and Jasmine Rios (Sr./Greensboro, NC) homered for the Lady Falcons.

McPhaul was 1-for-2 with a double. The trio of Sanchez, Rios and Parker each scored for the Lady Falcons.

The Lady Falcons face Virginia Union University at 1 p.m. and Virginia State University at 3 p.m. on Sunday, March 18, which is the final day of the CIAA Round-Up.
