Parker's Walk-Off Single Lifts SAU Softball Past Virginia Union

RALEIGH, N.C. (March 19) – Marley Parker (Sr./Langley, British Columbia) hit a two-out, walk-off single in the seventh inning as Saint Augustine's University edged Virginia Union University 3-2 in the CIAA Softball Round-Up at South Park Complex in Elizabeth City, N.C., on Sunday, March 18. The Lady Falcons ended the day with an 8-0 loss to Virginia State University to finish 4-2 in the three-day Round-Up, which is tied for the best conference mark in the Southern Division.

The Lady Falcons led 2-0 in the second inning on RBI singles by Mechelle Moss (Fr./Nassau, Bahamas) and Chandra Mackey (Fr./Nassau, Bahamas). Virginia Union (3-4 overall, 3-3 CIAA) tied the score in the sixth inning before Parker's game-winning hit in the seventh.

Haili Pettifer (Sr./Langley, British Columbia) was 2-for-3 with one run scored and Akera McPhaul (Sr./Greensboro, NC) was 1-for-2 with one run scored for the Lady Falcons, who had eight hits. Mackey scored a run and had two stolen bases.

Parker was the winning pitcher after scattering seven hits in seven innings. The victory was her first of the season.

Against Virginia State (9-10 overall, 6-0 CIAA), the Lady Falcons gave up seven runs in the second inning of a five-inning loss. Pettifer and McPhaul each had a hit in the contest.

After spring break, the Lady Falcons return to action in a doubleheader against The University of Virginia-Wise in Wise, Va., on March 27. The first game starts at 1 p.m.
