SAU Softball Remains In First After Doubleheader Split Against Shaw

RALEIGH, N.C. (April 14) – Saint Augustine's University maintained its grip on first place in the Southern Division after splitting a softball doubleheader against crosstown rival Shaw University at Worthdale Park on Saturday. The Lady Falcons won the first game 13-5 and fell in the second game 8-6.

The Lady Falcons sit atop the division standings at 5-1, ahead of Fayetteville State University which is second at 3-1. Shaw is third at 4-2.


One of the nation's best hitting teams in Division II, the Lady Falcons totaled 22 hits in two games against the Lady Bears, producing 11 hits in each game. Their hits led to numerous runs in the first contest.

The Lady Falcons tallied 11 RBIs in the first game including two apiece by Tamiera Sanchez (So./Sacramento, CA), Marley Parker (Sr./Langley, British Columbia), Haili Pettifer (Sr./Langley, British Columbia) and Mechelle Moss (Fr./Nassau, Bahamas).

Buoyed by their timely hitting, the Lady Falcons handled the Lady Bears, scoring in every inning but the second. After the Lady Bears cut a 9-1 deficit to 9-5 in the fifth inning, the Lady Falcons exploded for four runs in the sixth for the final score. The game was stopped in the sixth due to the eight-run mercy rule.

Parker batted 2-for-3 with a double and three runs scored in addition to her two RBIs. Moss was 2-for-4 with one run scored and two RBIs and Makayla August (So./Palm Springs, CA) was 2-for-4 with one RBI and one run scored. Pettifer scored two runs in addition to her two RBIs and Akera McPhaul (Sr./Greensboro, NC) had a double and an RBI.

Parker scattered eight hits and allowed three earned runs in six innings for the pitching victory. She evened her record to 2-2.

Christine Ngeve was 3-for-4 with two doubles, three RBIs and one run scored for the Lady Bears. Brittany Kline had a triple and two RBIs.

In the second game, the Lady Falcons nearly rallied from an 8-3 deficit in the top of the seventh. Jasmine Rios (Sr./Greensboro, NC), the No. 1 triples hitter in Division II, smacked a two-run triple and scored on Parker's sacrifice fly to get the Lady Falcons within two runs.

The Lady Falcons had runners on third and second base with two outs, but the Lady Bears forced a groundout to the second baseman for the win.

Rios was 3-for-4 with a triple, two RBIs and two runs scored for the Lady Falcons, 12-8 overall and 9-3 in the CIAA. August was 2-for-4 with an RBI and one run scored and Parker finished with a double, one RBI and one run scored. Sanchez was 2-for-4 with one run scored.

Tajia Bailey had a triple and three RBIs for the Lady Bears, 10-14 overall and 8-4 in the CIAA. Kline was 2-for-3 with a triple, two RBIs and one run scored.

The loss ended the Lady Falcons' five-game win streak. The Lady Falcons also fell to the Lady Bears for the first time in 14 games.

Four key division games are left for the Lady Falcons, including two against Winston-Salem State University on Friday, April 20, at Lions Park beginning at 12 p.m. The foursome of McPhaul, Parker, Pettifer and Rios will be recognized on Senior Day.
