The Lady Falcons Have Won At Least A Share Of The Southern Division Crown Twice In The Last Four Seasons

Southern Division Champion SAU Softball Opens CIAA Championships Ranked Among Nation's Top-Hitting Teams

RALEIGH, N.C. (April 26) – Southern Division champ Saint Augustine's University opens the CIAA Softball Championships as the division's top seed early next week.
 
The Lady Falcons (16-8 overall, 9-1 Southern Division) take on Bowie State University in a first-round game on Monday, April 30. The contest will start at 12 p.m. at the Moyer Sports Complex in Salem, Va.
 
The SAU women swept Fayetteville State University 9-7 and 10-2 in Raleigh, N.C., to win the division crown on Sunday, April 22. They enter the tournament nationally ranked in several team and individual offensive categories. Team-wise, the Lady Falcons are first in triples per game (1.08), second in doubles per game (2.54), third in batting average (.366), fourth in slugging percentage (.623) and seventh in runs per game (8.13).
 
Individually, Makayla August (So./Palm Springs, CA) leads the nation in doubles per game (0.58) and Jasmine Rios (Sr./Greensboro, NC) leads the country in triples per game (0.38). Marley Parker (Sr./Langley, British Columbia) ranks nationally in the top 10 in four categories – sixth in batting average (.493), sixth in toughest to strike out, seventh in slugging percentage (.960) and ninth in runs per game (1.29).
 
Parker also ranks 13th in the nation in triples per game (0.17), 15th in runs batted in per game (1.25) and 16th in on-base percentage (.542). Tamiera Sanchez (So./Sacramento, CA) ranks ninth in runs per game (1.29) and Mechelle Moss (Fr./Nassau, Bahamas) ranks 11th in triples per game (0.17).
 
The SAU-Bowie State winner will face the Virginia Union University-Winston-Salem State University winner later Monday at 5 p.m. The losers of both games will play in the elimination bracket on Monday at 5 p.m. The Bulldogs, seeded fourth in the Northern Division, finished the regular season 12-17 overall and 5-5 in the division.
 
The Bulldogs and Lady Falcons met once during the regular season. The Lady Falcons won 5-4 in the CIAA Round-Up in March when Akera McPhaul (Sr./Greensboro, NC) hit a solo home run in the fifth inning and Parker smacked a two-run homer in the sixth inning.
