Box Score 2 SALEM, Va. (April 30) – Saint Augustine's University advanced to the second day of the CIAA Softball Championship Tournament after toppling Virginia Union University 11-3 at the Moyer Sports Complex on Monday.
The Lady Falcons (17-9 overall) play Fayetteville State University in an elimination game Tuesday, May 1, at 12 p.m. The contest is a rematch of last Sunday's doubleheader, which the Lady Falcons swept to win the Southern Division championship. The Lady Falcons need three wins Tuesday to reach Wednesday's championship round.
Against Virginia Union, Makayla August (So./Palm Springs, CA) fired a four-hitter in six innings and knocked in two runs to lead the Lady Falcons. She was 2-for-3 at the plate with two runs scored.
Akera McPhaul (Sr./Greensboro, NC) hit a team-high three RBIs on 2-for-4 hitting and Marley Parker (Sr./Langley, British Columbia) was 3-for-4 with an RBI and two runs scored. Tamiera Sanchez (So./Sacramento, CA) was 2-for-4 with a double and three runs scored, and Jasmine Rios (Sr./Greensboro, NC) scored two runs for the Lady Falcons, who tallied 10 hits.
The Lady Falcons never trailed after opening a 5-0 lead in the first inning. McPhaul led the team with a two-run single and Parker added an RBI single in the inning. Rios scored on an infield error.
The Lady Panthers scored two runs in the fourth inning, but the Lady Falcons responded with three runs in the same inning for an 8-2 lead. Both Sanchez and Chandra Mackey (Fr./Nassau, Bahamas) scored on an infield error and August had an RBI single.
Led by McPhaul and August, the Lady Falcons finished off the Lady Panthers in the sixth. Both players collected RBI singles and Parker scored on an infield error to offset the Lady Panthers' run in the same inning.
The Lady Falcons bounced back against the Lady Panthers after falling to Bowie State University in a first-round game earlier Monday. Despite hitting three home runs, the Lady Falcons fell 12-6 after leading 6-2 heading into the seventh inning.
The trio of Parker, August and Sessoms all homered for the Lady Falcons. Parker hit a two-run homer followed by August's solo shot in the third inning to help erase a 2-1 deficit. Sessoms added a solo homer in the fifth for a four-run lead.
The Lady Falcons appeared headed for victory, but the Bulldogs put together a 10-run rally in the seventh to send the Lady Falcons into the elimination bracket.
Parker was 2-for-4 with a home run, two RBIs and one run scored for the Lady Falcons, who had 11 hits. Sessoms was 3-for-4 with a home run, double, one RBI and one run scored, and August was 2-for-4 with a home run, double, one RBI and two runs scored. Haili Pettifer (Sr./Langley, British Columbia) finished 2-for-3 with one RBI and Sanchez was 2-for-3 with one run scored for the Lady Falcons.
