Both the Lady Falcons (4-4 Southern Division, 5-9 CIAA) and Broncos (2-6 Southern Division, 5-9 CIAA) are battling for the No. 4 and final Southern Division seed in the CIAA Championship Tournament with four games remaining. The Lady Falcons can clinch a tournament berth with a sweep on Monday.
The Lady Falcons are led by All-American Makayla August (Jr./Palm Springs, CA) and All-CIAA player Haley Sessoms (Jr./Kenansville, NC). August ranks in the CIAA's top 10 in batting average (4th/.451), on-base percentage (8th/.541), slugging percentage (10th/.706) and triples (5th tied/3). As a pitcher, August ranks third in the conference in strikeouts (86).
Sessoms ranks seventh in batting average (.426) and sixth in doubles (10) in the CIAA. She is tied for fifth in the conference in stolen bases (13) and leads the Lady Falcons in RBIs (14).
Nicole Brown of FSU ranks eighth in batting average (.423) and Madison Mendoza ranks seventh in slugging percentage (.713) in the CIAA. Broncos' pitcher Ashlyn Zook ranks fourth in earned run average (3.23) in the conference.
The doubleheader was originally scheduled for April 14 in Fayetteville, N.C., but was postponed due to inclement weather.
After facing Fayetteville State, the Lady Falcons conclude the regular season with a trip to Winston-Salem State University in Winston-Salem, N.C., on Friday, April 26. Starting times are 1 p.m. and approximately 3 p.m.
