CHARLOTTE, N.C. (Feb. 11) – Kaaliya Williams (Sr./Richmond, VA) scored 12 points and Shankia Clark (Sr./Orlando, FL) added nine points and a career-high 17 rebounds for Saint Augustine's University in a 61-46 loss to Johnson C. Smith University in a CIAA women's basketball contest at Brayboy Gymnasium on Tuesday.
The Lady Falcons jumped out to a fast start to control the first half. SAU opened a 21-6 second-period lead on a three-pointer and jumper by Williams and led 27-21 at halftime.
The momentum changed in the third period. The Lady Falcons were outscored 26-7 to trail 47-34 heading into the fourth period. They pulled within 50-43 on two free throws by Kiana Clark (Sr./Queens, NY) with just under seven minutes left but got no closer.
Shankia Clark and Angela Caraballo (Sr./Richmond, VA) both collected three steals for the Lady Falcons, who finished with nine steals. The Lady Falcons won the rebounding battle 54-50, including 25-11 on the offensive glass. Their dominance on the offensive boards led to a 19-6 advantage in second chance points.
Eight of Shankia Clark's 17 rebounds were on the offensive end. Jordyn Burton (So./Durham, NC) pulled down seven total rebounds.
Le'Zarea Bowens paced the Golden Bulls (15-9 overall, 10-4 CIAA) with 17 points, 13 rebounds and three blocks. Maiya Green added 13 points as the Golden Bulls outscored the Lady Falcons 32-16 in points in the paint.
The Lady Falcons (9-16 overall, 4-11 CIAA) head to Spaulding Gymnasium on Friday, Feb. 14, to face crosstown rival Shaw University. Tipoff is 6 p.m.
