Womens Basketball Set for Home Opener

TIP-OFF
  • Falcons Women's Basketball opens the 2023-24 season at home on Saturday afternoon with a matchup with the University of Mount Olive at 2 p.m., live on the CIAA Network.
  • Saturday's game marks the 10th meeting between the Falcons and Trojans in the history of their respective programs.
  • The Falcons come into the contest after scrimmages with Wake Tech CC and Bryant & Stratton. They are 8-4 in home openers over the past 12 season and 2-0 under Coach Tanner.
  • In matchups with the Trojans they are 1-8 all time; the lone victory coming in the 2015 campaign here in Emery Gymnasium a 89-80 victory.  The last time the two programs met was in 2019, a 70-68 road loss for the Falcons.  
  • The Falcons return a core of five letter winners from a season ago while also welcoming nine newcomers to the roster.
  • Returners include 2022-23 ALL-CIAA performer Lauren Banks (Clinton, MD, Riverdale Baptist HS) and top contributor Taniyah Greene (Cheltenham, MD, Riverdale Baptist HS) from last season.
  • Impact players to watch that have joined the roster include Sophomore transfer Prophet Sheffield (Richmond, VA, Hampton HS) and Freshman Jada Jackson (Hampton, VA, Bethel HS).
  • This is also a season opener for Mount Olive who returns top scoring threat Laila Anderson and rebound leader Reagan Hune from their 2022-23 campaign in which they went 15-15.
  • Coach Wendy Lee is in her 24th season at the helm for the Trojans.
 
52ND SEASON OF FALCONS WOMEN'S BASKETBALL
  • The 2023-24 season signifies the 52nd season of Falcons women's basketball.
  • SAU has compiled a 527-549 (.490) all-time record dating back to the 1982-83 season.
  • Over the history of the program, the Falcons have made many deep runs in the CIAA Tournament capturing their lone title in 1978.
 
TANNER ENTERS YEAR THREE
  • Head coach Ebony Tanner enters her third season at the helm of the Falcons women's basketball program with an overall career record of 18-32.
  • In her third year, Tanner is optimistic about the new additions to the roster and the scoring threats they have all over the court; After an injury plagued 2022-23 season, she hopes to continue the upward trajectory from season one in which the Falcons had their best season in nearly a decade.
